Mission Statement

Manatee County Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, community, and hope.

Vision: Our vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live.

How did you hear about our organization?

A colleague who used to work for the Lake Club.

What do you believe we can provide your organization?

We hope the Lake Club Women’s Giving Circle will provide a group of women willing to help with our 2027 Women Build by volunteering and raising funds to build a home for a single mother and her family. In addition to a providing a grant to help build the home, we would be thrilled if TLCWCF would register a team to volunteer and to raise funds and compete for benefits (tickets to events) based on how much the team raises. Teams hold fun fundraising events and participate in Women Build events such as the Great Gingerbread Buildoff and our “Raise The Roof” Gala on March 13, 2027 at The Grove.

What will the grant be used for?

Manatee County Habitat for Humanity’s (MCHFH) Women Build campaign is a powerful movement that empowers women from all walks of life to come together and provide a single mother and her family with a safe, affordable place to call home. Please join us in fundraising, building, and event planning yearlong to get our 2027 Women Build homeowner into their home. Donations and volunteering are key to the success of our Women Build Campaign. We rely on individuals like you to chip in and help us fund the construction of the home and plan our many Women Build fundraising events through out the year. NOTE: although funding will be used towards building a home, this is much more than a capital grant. It is the Lake Club Women’s Giving Circle opportunity to bring stability to a Manatee County family that has struggled to thrive. MCHFH provides each family with much more than a house. We provide them with support, encouragement, education, and chance to achieve the American Dream. Most of all, it is a step up, not only for this generation but for those that follow.

Tne requested amount would provide 200 of the approximately 300 Integrated Concrete Form (ICF) Blocks needed to build the walls of the home. ICF blocks are extremely sturdy – the styrofoam forms are filled with rebar and SOLID concrete – and they also create a thermal mass, which lowers the cost of cooling and heating the home well below normal costs for a home of this size. TLCWCF would be underwriting 2/3 of the cost of the home’s walls. NOTE: We would be happy to provide one or more ICF blocks for members of the Lake Club Women’s GIving Circle to sign with notes of encouragement, poems, prayers and other good wishes. These will be built into the walls of the home.
NOTE: Should TLCWGC prefer, you may opt to designate a grant towards items needed to support the volunteers who build the home, including water and gatorade, ice, nutritious snacks, cooling towels, coolers, and other items required to ensure the health and comfort of our Women Build volunteers. At least 60% of every MCHFH house is built by volunteers. The budget for these items is $7,000.

Provide the grant amount you are seeking: $5,000.00

Do you provide services to Sarasota and/or Manatee County?
Yes

What is the financial impact per individual/program this grant will provide?

The true financial impact: Priceless. Your generosity will help a single, low-to-moderate income (50 to 80 percent of Area Median Income and unable to qualify for a traditional mortgage) mother who is living in unsustainable housing to purchase a home for her family with a low or zero-percent mortgage. Owning a home is transformative for current and future generations, often pulling a family entirely out of the cycle of poverty. Each family will be required to complete financial literacy and homeownership courses and work with a personal financial counselor (paid for by MCHFH) to meet financial goals they set together.

More than half of all renting families in Manatee County are “cost-burdened” – paying more than 30 percent of their monthly income in rent (see graph “Gross Rent as a Percentage of Household Income,2024 Estimates” at https://flhousingdata.shimberg.ufl.edu/affordability/results?nid=4000). According to United for ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed), 42 percent of Manatee households are below the ALICE threshold, meaning these families cannot afford household essentials: housing, childcare, food, transportation, health care, and a basic smartphone plan. They often are trapped in poor quality rental housing, which affects their health and the stability of the family, often moving frequently, which in itself is expensive and disrupts the lives of all.

Homeownership promotes greater economic stability, access to quality education, increased civic and social engagement, better health, and a reduced environmental footprint (page 1, Habitat for HumanityInternational Evidence Brief: What are the Benefits of Homeownership?). Yet it is currently out of reach for many families: “a first time homeowner would need toprovide $26,800 in cash to cover the downpayment and three percent of closing costs. Roughly 12 percent of renters can meet this requirement…” (see page 28 of Harvard/Joint Center for Housing Studies: The State of the Nation’s Housing 2025).

Among the many compelling benefits enjoyed by homeowners, a child that grows up in a Habitat home is twice as likely to go to college (fact #15 at https://www.habitat.org/stories/40-facts-about-habitat-humanity-and-housing). Homeownership is a larger share of net worth for low-income families (https://www.habitat.org/our-work/impact/research-series-outcomes-associated-with-homeownership) than for families with higher incomes.

At the end, this family will own a safe, energy- and water-efficient home with an affordable mortgage and will pay no more than 30 percent of their income for their mortgage. Most find that their monthly housing costs to purchase a Habitat home are significantly lower than renting, and their utility costs also tend to be lower.

Please provide the estimated number of women, children and families impacted.

1 woman-head of household family composed of the mother and 2 to 4 children. They currently live and/or work in Manatee County.
