Mission Statement

The mission of the Early Learning Coalition of Manatee County (ELC) is to provide and coordinate the services of school readiness programs, in an efficient manner, in order to help all children develop the skills needed to achieve future educational success, to support the role of parents as their child’s first and most important teacher, and to continue to improve the quality of services available in the community.

How did you hear about our organization?

The Early Learning Coalition of Manatee County (ELC) has received funding from your organization for the past two years. We are grateful for your continued support and the difference it has made for young children in our community.

What do you believe we can provide your organization?

The TLC Women’s Charitable Foundation can help the ELC maintain a strong and reliable group of ReadingPals volunteers. These mentors meet weekly with four-year-old children, sharing books and leading activities that build language and pre-reading skills. By helping volunteers complete the screening process, the Foundation would make it possible for trusted mentors to enter classrooms and give children individual attention throughout the 25- to 30-week program.

What will the grant be used for?

The requested $2,016 would pay for annual Level 2 background screenings for 56 volunteers serving ReadingPals, the ELC’s 25- to 30-week early literacy program. Through ReadingPals, trained volunteers meet weekly with four-year-old children in local early learning centers to share books and lead activities that build language and pre-reading skills. Every volunteer must complete a background screening before entering a classroom. Although the program requires a Level 1 screening, the ELC uses the more extensive Level 2 screening as an added safeguard for participating children.

Over the past 14 years, the Statewide ReadingPals initiative has matched more than 33,000 Florida children with mentors and provided 593,000 donated books. Support from the TLC Women’s Charitable Foundation would help sustain this ongoing work in Manatee County.

Provide the grant amount you are seeking: $2,016.00

Do you provide services to Sarasota and/or Manatee County?
Yes

What is the financial impact per individual/program this grant will provide?

Each Level 2 background screening costs $36. A $2,016 grant would cover screenings for 56 ReadingPals volunteers, allowing them to enter participating classrooms and provide weekly early literacy support to approximately 115 children during the 25- to 30-week program. This represents an investment of about $17.53 per child served.

Please provide the estimated number of women, children and families impacted.

The ReadingPals program will directly serve approximately 115 children in Manatee County during the 25- to 30-week program period. The requested funding will provide Level 2 background screenings for 56 volunteers who will work with these children in local early learning classrooms. Children also bring books and activities home to share with parents, caregivers, and siblings, extending the program’s benefits to an estimated 250 to 300 children and family members.
