Were the funds spent with a year of grant receipt?   Yes

If no, please explain why not below:

How was the money used?

The $3000 grant was used to purchase food for the BackPack Program. All the food in the backpacks is purchased to ensure nutritional consistency with low sodium, low sugar and allergen free items. The backpacks cost $5 to distribute. With this funding we were able to create 600 backpacks for distribution.

Was there an unexpected benefit or a special outcome from this grant that you would like to share? Yes

If yes, please explain:

During the grant period, All Faiths Food Bank (AFFB) conducted an evaluation of the program’s distribution channels and the contents of the bags. Schools and childcare centers are the most direct and efficient means of distributing the backpacks. We decided to stop backpack distributions at libraries during the school year because it appeared to duplicate efforts. Instead a monthly nutrition education program would be offered at libraries to help children learn about healthier food habits. Libraries would continue to distribute backpacks during the summer school breaks when not all schools are open. The contents of the backpacks were evaluated. The bags now contain 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches and snacks rather than just snacks. We feel this provides better nutrition for children and covers the meals they might miss at home on weekends. The system for ordering backpacks was streamlined so school and childcare center personnel place orders as needed as opposed to delivering a set number of backpacks to each facility.

How many people were impacted by this grant?
