Mission Statement

We educate and empower individuals affected by vision loss, enabling them to live happy, healthy, and independent lives.

How did you hear about our organization?

We were invited to apply by one of your members last year.

What do you believe we can provide your organization?

Lighthouse is a believer in organic marketing. Giving Lighthouse the opportunity to speak to your group, like in February of this past year, helps us spread the word of our programs and services. Lighthouse also has opportunities for groups to volunteer – either with light office work (event preparation) or lend support to our staff for a class outing.

What will the grant be used for?

Now in its second year, the Lighthouse children’s program is meeting the needs of visually impaired students teaching them use of accessibility tools that can be incorporated into their public-school classroom experience.

The Accessibyte software program teaches visually impaired children braille and comes with other tools for learning typing and math. For the 10 clients in the program, the cost of the program is $1,069. In addition, the program would also like to purchase Bluetooth keyboards, specifically designed for individuals with low vision (total cost $1,400), as well as other software subscriptions and tools for teaching braille.

Provide the grant amount you are seeking: $4,000.00

Do you provide services to Sarasota and/or Manatee County?
Yes

What is the financial impact per individual/program this grant will provide?

The benefit to each child would be about $400.

Please provide the estimated number of women, children and families impacted.

The program has capacity for 10 children, ranging between the ages of 5 and 13. They can remain in the program until they turn 14 and then transfer to the Lighthouse Youth program. To date, 12 children have been in the program. All 1:1 instruction is age and grade-level appropriate and helps each child as they advance through elementary and middle school. That said, Lighthouse anticipates serving 10 children with these funds.

Anything else you would like to share with us?

I will be departing Lighthouse Friday, October 2 for another position. My time here has been incredibly rewarding and I have learned so much about both the challenges facing and tools supporting people with vision loss. It has been an extraordinary experience. I will carry what I’ve learned with me and if/when I meet someone who could use Lighthouse services, I’d certainly refer them here.

That said, emails to me will be forwarded to another person on the development team, Jason Rhodes after I leave. I’d recommend adding Jason and our CEO, Alexandra Elman Foley. I would also copy Mary McClure on any correspondence.
